Carlo Mattioli

Carlo Mattioli was an Italian race walker. He joined the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri (a military group) and was an active athlete for about 20 years. Domestically he competed in many championships on track (gold in 1986), road (winning the 20 km in 1987), and in the 5,000 metres indoor with five titles (1979-80, 1985-87).

Internationally Mattioli competed almost exclusively in the 20 kilometres: twice at the Olympic Games (1984 and 1988), twice at the World Championships (18th in 1983 and 5th 1987), five times at the World Cup (with a best result of 7th in 1983), twice at the European Championships (6th in 1982 and 11th in 1986), twice at the Mediterranean Games (bronze in 1979 and silver four years later), and at the 1981 Summer Universiade, where he took silver.

In the 20 km Mattioli set his personal best on 24 September 1983 in Bergen (Norway) with 1-21:11, while in the 50 km his best time was 4-01:23, recorded in the city of Canicattì on 17 March 1985. After finishing his active career, he became the coach of the club Sport Atletica Ferrero in the city of Senigallia.
