Giuseppe Palmieri

Giuseppe Palmieri was a keen all-round sportsman: basketball player and coach, high jumper, and javelin thrower. He won five consecutive Italian high jump titles (1924-28), setting four Italian records between 1926 and 1929, and bringing the record from 1.843 to 1.86. He was twice national champion in the javelin (1925, 1929), setting one national record with 59.68, a mark he set in Bologna on 7 October 1928. Internationally he won numerous meetings and attended the 1924 Olympics where he was entered in the high jump, javelin, and pentathlon, but competed only in the high jump. He earned 15 international caps from 1924-32.

In 1934 Palmieri was player-coach of Virtus Bologna in the basketball First Division. From December 1937 he moved to Catania to lead the local athletics, tennis, and basketball teams. Palmieri then coached the hoop teams of G.U.F. (Fascist University Group) and Gioventù Italiana del Littorio, with whom he disputed the First Male and Female Division.
