Center Norbert Thimm was on the West German basketball team at the 1972 München Olympics. The team lost both the classification match for places 9-12 against Australia by only one point (70-69), and also lost the 11th place match by one point against Spain (84-83). Thimm earned 150 international caps. Domestically, he played with SSV Hagen (1967-69), and TuS 04 Leverkusen (1969-72, and 1974-81, West German champion from 1970–1972 and 1976, and West German cup winner in 1970, 1971, and 1976).
In 1972 Thimm was the first West German pro who was offered a contract with a foreign club and he moved to Real Madrid in Spain for two years, but he rarely made the starting lineup. He later studied psychology, graduating in the 1970s.Thimm later worked with Bayer Leverkusen as a human resource manager. His daughter Birte also became a basketball pro in Germany.
