Biography

Mario Vecchiato was an Italian hammer thrower. In 1970 he won his first Italian title, repeating in 1971-72, and set his first Italian record with 65.66 in Udine on 18 April. In 1971 he improved further, winning a silver medal at the Mediterranean Games, and he was 10th at the European Championships.

Vecchiato competed at the 1972 München Olympics, finishing ninth. Shortly after the Olympics, on 10 September 1972, he set his final Italian record, with 74.36 at Gorizia, a mark that would have brought him an Olympic bronze medal. He was capped 16 times for Italy (1970-72), retiring after the 1973 season.
