Biography

Hyacinth Walters began representing Jamaica in track athletics after World War II, beginning with the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, where she took bronze in the 50 metres and silver in the 4x100 metres relay alongside Cynthia Thompson and the non-Olympians Cynthia Llewellyn and Icis Clarke. She had her greatest success four years later, however, when she captured gold in three events at the 1950 edition: in the 50 and 100 metres, as well as the 4x100 metres relay with Thompson, Kathleen Russell and the non-Olympian Karleen Searchwell. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, she was eliminated in the heats of both the 100 and 200 metres.

Walters ended her career at the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games, winning silver in both the 100 metres and the 4x100 metres relay, the latter alongside Thompson, Russell, and the non-Olympian Kathleen Robotham. She later became a teacher and moved to the United States, settling in New York.

Personal Bests: 100 – 11.8 (1952); 200 – 25.59 (1952).
