Mal Spence had the following podium finishes at major championships: 1st in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 4×440 yards Relay (with George Kerr, Laurie Khan, and Mel Spence), 3rd in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 4×440 yards Relay (with George Kerr, Keith Gardner, and the non-Olympian Gerald James); 1st in the 1959 Pan American Games 4×400 metres Relay (with Mel Spence, George Kerr, and the non-Olympian Basil Ince [TRI]), 3rd in the 1959 Pan American Games 400 metres, 3rd in the 1963 Pan American Games 4×400 metres Relay (with Rupert Hoilette, Mel Spence, and the non-Olympian Anthony Carr). In the 440 yards event Mal Spence finished fifth in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, was eliminated in the quarter-finals in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and in the heats in the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. In all British Empire and Commonwealth Games he competed for Jamiaca and in the Pan American Games he competed for the British West Indies in 1959 and for Jamaica in 1963.
