Isao Abe was a hammer thrower but also excelled as a shot putter, winning the 1934 Far Eastern Games in Manila, as there was no hammer throw on the program. In the same year, he bettered the Japanese record in the hammer throw twice. In this event, he claimed three titles at the Japan Athletics Championships, in 1933, 1934 and again after World War II in 1947. After graduating from Chuo University he joined the Ministry of Railways.
