Kikunosuke Tashiro was the first Japanese record holder in the 10,000 metres. He attended Chuo University but also worked as a rickshaw man. This created a discussion whether he could be considered as an amateur. Also many elite students refused to compete with workers’ sportsmen. In Paris, he only took part in the marathon, although he was also entered the 5,000 and 10,000. In 1927 and 1928, he participated in the 8th and 9th Hakone Ekiden.
