Prior to the start of World War II Adalberts Bubenko was one of the best racewalkers in Latvia. Bubenko set multiple national records in races from 15 to 50 kilometres in addition to becoming the Latvian champion in the 25 km in 1930 and 1933. His best result came at the 1936 Berlin Olympics when he won bronze in the 50 kilometres race walk. Away from athletics Bubenko worked as the department manager in a thrift store. By 1944 he had emigrated to Germany, before moving to Australia and finally settling in Canada. He continued to work in the trade sector, owning grocery stores in both Adelaide and Toronto.
