The tiny European micronation of Liechtenstein made its Olympic début at the 1936 Berlin Games, with Oskar Ospelt being one of the six athletes to represent the country. Ospelt competed in both the 100 metres and the discus throw in Berlin but did not advance from the heats in either event. He also had the honour of being the flagbearer for Liechtenstein at the Opening Ceremony. After the Olympics he competed in the discus and javelin at the 1938 European Athletics Championships, finishing 15th and 8th, respectively. Later the same year Ospelt set a national record in the discus when he threw 43.36 metres in Basel, Switzerland, with the record still standing by the end of 2018. After the war he once again competed at the European Athletics Championships, this time in Oslo in 1946, finishing 11th in the discus and 13th in the javelin. Ospelt participated at his third and final European championships in 1954 where he finished last in the qualification round for the discus.
