During the 1930s Mexican sportsman Salvador Alanís took part in track and field athletics and volleyball. Alanís competed in the triple jump at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, becoming the first athlete from his country to participate in the event at the Olympic Games. Out of the 16 competitors, however, he finished 15th, only ahead of the Canadian Jack Portland, who failed to record a valid mark. Despite his poor performance at the Olympics he went on to win bronze in the event at the 1935 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador. Three years later he returned to the Central American and Caribbean Games where he won silver in the volleyball tournament. Alanís continued to be involved in sport throughout his life including serving as the Vice-President of the Mexican Athletics Federation at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
