Mexican track and field athlete Ricardo Argüello became the first Tijuana native to participate in the Olympics when he competed at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Whilst he was at school Argüello stood out amongst the other competitors on the athletics track and soon transferred to Mexico City to compete at a national level. His performances earned him a place at the Olympics in Los Angeles, with him travelling to the Games in a truck across the Mexico-US border. Upon his arrival in the United States he became the subject of multiple journalists’ articles about his preparation. Argüello ran in both the 400 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay but was eliminated in the heats in both races.
