Biography

Maltese businessman and public servant Austin Cassar-Torreggiani also had a brief career as a track and field athlete. Cassar-Torreggiani was selected to compete for Malta in 100 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he ran in the same heat as the legendary Jesse Owens. As a businessman Cassar-Torreggiani worked for Cassar Co Ltd in Malta before being elected as the President of the Malta Millers’ Association. Throughout his life he was involved in multiple sectors of the economy, including textiles, property, and printing, in addition to serving as a director of the Maltese national bank. Cassar-Torreggiani was awarded with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for public services in Malta in the Queen’s 1955 Birthday Honours. In 2004 he was posthumously inducted into the Old Edwardian’s Hall of Fame for his Olympic appearance.
