Biography

Wang Nanzhen, formerly known as Wang Shiyuan, was selected as a member of the Shanghai basketball team while attending high school. He captained the team for several years. In 1936, Wang represented China at the Berlin Olympics before he graduated from Jinan University in 1937. Later, he successively coached at Jinan, Fudan and Tongji universities and was instrumental in establishing the physical education department at the Shanghai Normal University. In 1957, Wang was among the first international football referees from People’s Republic of China appointed by FIFA. He was member of the China Democratic League, one of the legally recognized minor political parties in the PRC China. Wang Nanzhen died in 1992 after a long illness.
