Sium bin Diau took up sport at an early age and focused on football at first, before discovering his talents in track and field athletics, particularly the triple jump. His only major international appearance came when he was selected to represent North Borneo in that event at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the only edition in which it participated before joining with other nations to form Malaysia in 1964. At the Games, he placed 28th in the qualifying round and was eliminated. Sium retired from active competition after the Olympics and continued his previous work as a primary school teacher. In 2008, he was given the title of Datuk for his achievements, the equivalent of a knighthood.
