In the late 1960s and early 1970s Berny Boxem-Lenferink was one of the best middle-distance and cross country runners in the Netherlands. In 1968 Boxem-Lenferink competed at her first national championships, running in the 800 metres, but her career was briefly put on hold when she broke a bone in her foot during the race. Upon her return to athletics she became the Dutch cross country champion in 1971 and 1972, and finished second at the 1971 International Cross Country Championships. Boxem-Lenferink was also a fine 1,500 metres runner and finished ninth in the event at the 1972 München Olympics. This turned out to be her final race, as she retired from athletics following the Games.
