At the beginning of the 20th century racewalking became popular in the Netherlands with Piet Soudyn becoming an early pioneer of the sport. In 1898 he became the first Dutch athlete to win a national racewalking title with victory in the 5,000 metres event. Soudyn won two further Dutch titles during his career, winning the 10 km race in 1902, and the 3,500 metres in 1908. Also in 1908, he also competed at the London Olympics where he participated in the 3,500 metres and the 10 miles.
