From his days as a gymnast Van der Zee moved to pole vaulting and went on to win multiple national titles and set several records. Not long after he took up the sport he was selected to compete at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where he came 14th. He continued to work hard in the discipline and finished second the following year at the AAA Championships in London. His breakout year was 1930, when he became the Dutch champion, setting a Dutch record, and shared the AAA title with the Swedish pole vaulter Henry Lindblad. Van der Zee won a further four Dutch titles from 1931 to 1935, in addition to improving the national record four more times. After his retirement he worked as a fitness coach for the Norwegian skating team.
