Biography

In the 1920s and 1930s Pleun van Leenen competed in marathon races across the Netherlands and became a three-time national champion in the discipline. Van Leenen made his début in the event at the 1926 Rotterdam Marathon where he finished third, before finishing second at the Amsterdam Marathon the following year. In 1928 he won the qualification race for the upcoming Amsterdam Olympics, but went on to finish in a disappointing 55th at the Games. He continued to compete in long-distance running throughout the 1930s, becoming a three-time Dutch marathon champion and winning back-to-back titles in 1932 and 1933, followed by a third title in 1938.
