Urbano Zea excelled at basketball while at school, going on to play in municipal tournaments and leagues in both Juárez and El Paso. He played in 15 state championships and nine national championships. Zea represented Mexico at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago and the 1960 Roma Olympics. At the Olympics, he played in eight matches scoring two points.
In 1963, Zea played at the Basketball World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, playing seven matches and scoring 41 points. After his playing career, he became a coach, with a gym in his local neighbourhood named after him.
In 1986, Zea was inducted into the Ciudad Juárez Sport’s Hall of Fame. He was also a director of municipal sports from 1998 to 2001. Zea spent the last part of his life living in Texas.
