Knut Hjeltnes was a Norwegian weight thrower, primarily known internationally for his prowess in the discus throw. He was a 20-time Norwegian Champion, winning 11 with the discus (1975-76, 1978, 1980-4, 1986, 1988-89) and nine in the shot put (1975-78, 1980-84).
Hjeltnes competed at the 1976, 1984, and 1988 Olympic Games, placing fourth in 1984 and seventh in 1976 and 1988. He placed fourth at the 1986 European Championships and ninth at the 1983 World Championships. Hjeltnes was ranked in the world top 10 eight times from 1976-86 with a best placement of second in 1986.
Hjeltnes attended college in the United States, starting at Western Maryland College, then moving to Penn State and finally Brigham Young University. He became a track & field coach in the USA, coaching at the US Military Academy at West Point from 1999-2013, but he then moved to Auburn University before retiring in 2016.
Hjeltnes served a one-year suspension for doping with anabolic steroids, starting in 1977. He later admitted to doping, claiming almost all international competitors did so during his career, and he wrote a book about doping, admitting to his personal history.
