Trev Haynes hoped to make the 1960 Olympic team after winning the 1959 Benetar Trophy as the most outstanding athlete at the Federal Championships for Northern Rhodesia for his marathon time of 2-37:15.2, but an injured Achilles’ tendon in April 1960 prevented him from making the team. Haynes made his career as an engineering and topographical surveyor, after studying at Kingswood College in Grahamstown, South Africa. He later also worked in sports administration with the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian Amateur Athletics Association, the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian Olympic, Commonwealth Games and All-African Games Association, and the Zambian Swimming Association. In 1964 he carried the Northern Rhodesian flag at the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony, but as Zambia declared its independence on 24 October 1964, Haynes carried the Zambian flag at the Closing Ceremony.
