Biography

John Macfarlane Holland, nicknamed “Dutch”, won the bronze medal in the 400 metres hurdles at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 after failing to qualify from the semifinals in London four years before. At the 1950 Empire Games in Auckland, Holland was second in the 440 yards hurdles to Duncan White of Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), who had been the silver medallist in London. Holland also gained a bronze medal in the 4×440 yards relay (with the non-Olympians David Batten, Derek Stewart, and Jack Sutherland) and finished fifth in the 120 yards hurdles in Auckland.
