Jeff Julian ran the marathon at both the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, finishing 18th at Roma and 29th at Tokyo. He also competed at three Commonwealth Games, placing 7th in the marathon and 10th in the 6-mile in 1962, then finishing 5th and 18th in the marathon in 1966 and 1970, respectively. Julian’s greatest athletics moment came in 1963. He won the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan, which at the time was considered one of the most prestigious marathons on the world circuit. He won the race in 2-14:38, which would be his lifetime personal best.
Julian worked for the Bank of New Zealand for 36 years but was then made redundant. He tried other business ventures, including selling live Aloe vera to farmers, but he failed to prosper. In 2000 Julian was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud between 1996-98 and was sentenced to two years in prison. He had made 198 transactions worth over $2 million on credit cards and was unable to make those payments.
Personal Best: Mar – 2-14:38 (1969).
