Porfirio Méndez ran the 800 metres for Paraguay at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Méndez also ran at the 1995 Pan American Games, placing sixth in his semi-final of the 800 metres, and finishing ninth in the final of the 1,500 metres. He also competed at the 1986 South American (ODESUR) Games. He later became a professor of physical education at Colegio Ysaty and Colegio Primero de Marzo. Méndez died fairly young of a heart attack he suffered while running.
