Biography

Peruvian track and field athlete Fernando Acevedo excelled in sprinting and won multiple medals in competitions in South America in addition to setting several long-standing national records. Acevedo ran in the 200 metres at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he reached the semi-finals. Four years later he ran in the 400 metres at the 1972 München Olympics but did not advance from the heats.

In between his two appearances at the Olympics, Acevedo competed at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. He won bronze in the 400 metres, finished fourth in the 200 metres, and fifth in the 4 × 400 metres relay. He set Peruvian records in the 400 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay with the both records still standing at the time of his death in January 2024. Acevedo also held long-standing national records in the 100 metres (1977 to 2014) and the 200 metres (1971 to 2016).

Acevedo had an impressive medal haul at the Bolivarian Games where he won gold in the 100 metres (1970), 200 metres (1970, 1977), and the 400 metres (1970, 1973, 1977). He also won silver in the 100 metres in 1977. After his retirement from athletics Acevedo worked as physical trainer at a local athletics club and at the University of Lima.
