Kurt Baumgartner was born in the small village of Klein Göpfritz and moved to Vienna at the age of 17. The trained butcher followed in the footsteps of his elder brother Franz, who was Austrian welterweight champion in 1958, joining Polizei SV. After a boxing meeting in Passau, at the beginning of the 1960s, Baumgartner moved to Germany to continue his boxing career.
He spent a short time in Schramberg, Black Forest, but moved to ASV 97 Tuttlingen in 1963. Here he met his future wife Maria, with whom he was to have two children. He still represented Austria and became a three-time Austrian champion in light-heavyweight (1965, 1966, and 1968) and competed for his native country at the 1968 Olympics. In 1971 he received German citizenship and ended his boxing career in 1978. In Germany he also worked as butcher and later for 20 years as a gatekeeper for the Aesculap-Werke.
