Poland’s Bronisław Gancarz grew up with a passion for running and specialized in long-distance races. Gancarz was the Polish champion in the marathon on three occasions (1933–34, 1936) and set two national records in the event. In 1936 he ran in the marathon at the Berlin Olympics, finishing 33rd. Following the Olympics he worked as a PE teacher in local high school. Gancarz fought in the September Campaign at the start of World War II where he commanded a platoon in the town of Jarosław. After his time in the Polish Army he returned to civilian life, once again teaching PE in local schools.
