Biography

In addition to working as a journalist and a banker Feliks Malanowski was a long-time activist of the Polish Athletic Association and a champion middle-distance athlete. From 1926 to 1929 Malanowski represented Poland on six occasions at international competitions including the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. At the Amsterdam Games he ran in the 800 metres and the 4 × 400 metres relay but did not advance from the heats in either race. During his career he set 12 Polish records (800 metres, 2,000 metres, and relay races) and was a five-time national champion, with one title in the 1,500 metres (1928) and four in the 4 x 400 metres (1925–28).

In 1934 Malanowski began working in the Free City of Gdańsk as a physical education teacher. After the September Campaign in 1939 he worked as a conspiracy activist, ultimately becoming a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Mauthausen concentration camps from 1941 until 1945. Following the war Malanowski lived in Wrocław where he served as the President of the local athletics association for most of the 1950s and 1960s. He was awarded with the title of Honorary Member of the Polish Athletics Association, the Knight’s Cross, and the Medal of Victory and Freedom.

Personal Bests: 400 – 51.2 (1928); 800 – 1:58.0 (1928).
