During the interwar period Wilhelm Schneider was the best pole vaulter in Poland. Schneider won four national outdoor titles (1934, 1937–39) and two indoor titles (1935, 1937), and was a three-time Polish record holder in the event. At the 1936 Berlin Olympic he tied for sixth with ten other athletes who all had a best clearance of 4.00 metres. Two years later he finished fourth at the 1938 European Athletics Championships in Paris. Schneider fought in the September Campaign during World War II and was later an athletics coach.
