Biography

In the 1930s Ludovic Gall was the best marathon runner in Romania and won multiple national and international races. Gall won the marathon on three occasions at the Balkan Games (1932–33, 1935), along with winning a silver (1936) and two bronze medals (1937, 1939). At the Romanian national championships he won six titles (1933–36, 1938–39) and set Romanian records with his victories in 1935 and 1936. He ran in the marathon at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, finishing 23rd, becoming the first Romanian athlete to finish in the marathon at the Olympics. Gall was bestowed with several awards including the medal for Exceptional Sports Merit by the Union of Sports Federations of Romania, the National Sports Award, and the Cultural Merit for Sport. He was only 44-years-old when he died in September 1944. A street in the city of Sfântu Gheorghe was later named in his honour.
