Gheorghe Guşet was a three-time Olympian in the shot put, competing in 1992, 2000, and 2004. He was Romanian Champion in the shot put in 1990, 1992-94, and 1998-2006, winning 13 times in all. He competed six times at the World Championships, four times at the Europeans, six times at the World Indoors, and five times at the European Indoors. He was Balkan Games champion with the shot in 1990, 1992, 1999-2002, and 2004-05, also winning that title indoors in 1994, 1999-2002, and 2004-06. His only other international title came in winning the 1994 Jeux de la Francophone. His best major international placing came in finishing fourth at the World Indoors in 2000 and 2006.
Guşet competed into his late 30s, only retiring from competition when he began to suffer the effects of chronic kidney failure. He underwent a kidney transplant in 2008, but eventually died from complications of kidney disease at 49-years-old.
