Biography

Andries du Plessis was a South African track and field athlete who specialised in the pole vault. Du Plessis competed in the pole vault at the 1934 British Empire Games in London where he finished fourth. At the same Games he also ran in the 120 yards hurdles but was eliminated in the heats. Two years later he tied for 17th with six other athletes in the pole vault at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. His best result would come at the 1938 British Empire Games when he won gold, setting a Games record of 4.11 metres in the process. After his retirement from athletics du Plessis started a driving school in South Africa in 1940. Multiple members of his family also competed at the Olympics, including sons Fanie and Marthinus, grandson Tjaart, and great-granddaughter Renate.
