Biography

The peak of Athol Jennings’ track and field career came when he was selected to represent South Africa in the 1,500 metres event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. There, he was eliminated in round one. Although he continued competing for several years thereafter, he never attended another edition of the Games. By career he was a Methodist minister and he soon became interested in the administration of Christian education in South Africa. From 1974 through 1984 he served as principal of Waterford Kamhlaba United World College, and he was also involved in ecclesiastical administrative matters, helping to found the Diakonia Council of Churches.
