During the 1930s South African track and field athlete Edwin Thacker competed in the high jump. Thacker’s first major success came at the 1934 British Empire Games in London where he won gold in the event after beating Joe Haley in a jump-off. Two years later he tied for 12th with nine other athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1938 Thacker retained his high jump title at the British Empire Games, winning gold with a Games’ record in Sydney.
