Biography

Max Barandun was the top Swiss sprinter of the mid-1960s. He was Swiss 100 metres champion in 1964 and 1965. In 1964 he also helped his club TV Unterstrass, in their 100th anniversary year, to win the Swiss team championships for the first and, through 2010, only time. At this meeting in Lausanne he also posted his personal best and Swiss record with 10.3 (which he repeated in 1965) and qualified for the 1964 Olympics. In the following year he competed in the 1965 Universiade in Budapest, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 metres and ran on the Swiss relay team in the 4×100 metres. In 1966 he participated in the first European Indoor Championships (then known as the European Indoor Games) held in Dortmund, competing in the 60 metres, as well as in the European Athletics Championships again held in Budapest in the 100 metres, but was again eliminated in the semi-finals in both occasions. After his career he finished his study and become a math teacher. He worked for more than three decades at the secondary high school in Winterthur. He died shortly after his 68th birthday, having suffered with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) for several years.

Personal Best: 100 – 10.3 (1964).
