Johannes Baumgartner was an 800-metre runner who competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He also qualified for the 1956 Melbourne Games but Switzerland boycotted those Games in protest of the Soviet Union invasion of Hungary. Baumgartner competed for the RTV gymnastics club. He later became a teacher of Greek and Latin and a vice-principal in Münsterplatz in Bern.
