Walter Keller began competing in junior athletics competitions in Zürich by 1944, and later joined TV Neumünster, where spent his senior athletics career. He specialized in the 400 metres event, gaining notice by posting a time of 50.7 at an athletics meet in 1947.
Selected to represent his country at the 1948 Olympics in London, Keller ran in the 400 metres and 4 × 400 metres relay events (alongside fellow Zürich athletes Oskar Hardmeier, Max Trepp and Karl Volkmer), but did not advance past the heats in either. He continued competing in local and national competitions until 1951.
