Biography

Alfons Sidler was a Swiss long-distance runner who was active during the 1960s and the 1970s. Sidler won his first medal at the national championships in 1961 when he finished third in the 5,000 metres. Two years later he won another bronze in the same event, in addition to becoming the Swiss cross-country champion. In 1967 he won his third bronze in the 5,000 metres but had better success in the 10,000 metres, winning gold. In 1972 Sidler became the national champion in the marathon, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the München Games, however, he finished down the field in 44th place. Despite this, Sidler ran in the Košice Peace Marathon just a few weeks later, where he came ninth.
