Biography

During the 1980s Kjell-Erik Ståhl was regarded as one of the best marathon runners in Sweden. After beginning his career as a steeplechase runner, Ståhl soon moved up to the marathon distance and was selected to run in that event at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, finishing 19th. The following year he won both the Beijing Marathon and the Frankfurt Marathon, in addition to placing 12th in the New York Marathon.

Ståhl also had success at home, winning the Stockholm Marathon in 1981 and 1986. In 1982 he finished fifth in the Boston Marathon before just missing out on a medal at the 1983 World Championships in Finland when he came fourth. His time of 2-10:38 set a national record that stood until 2019. One year later he made his second appearance at the Olympics but failed to finish the race. Following his retirement Ståhl became involved with his local political party in Åhus.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-10:38 (1983).
