Swedish sportsman Åke Stenqvist was a fine all-round track and field athlete who won multiple national titles across several disciplines. Stenqvist won his first medals at the national championships in 1935 with gold in the long jump and bronze in the pentathlon. He then won a further six titles in the long jump (1936–38, 1940–42), three in the pentathlon (1940–42), and one in the 4 x 100 metres relay (1940). At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he ran in the 4 x 100 metres relay and finished tenth in the long jump. Two years later Stenqvist won bronze in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1938 European Championships with compatriots Lennart Lindgren, Lennart Strandberg, and Gösta Klemming. Stenqvist’s talents were not confined to athletics, with him also playing football, ice hockey, bandy, and handball, representing Sweden in international matches in the latter.
