John Gray was the son of an American from Arkansas and a Filipina mother. In 1930 he was a member of a Filipino collegiate team competing during the Far Eastern Games. The team, however, withdrew protesting arbitrary rulings of Japanese referees. In the flyweight class of the boxing tournament at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics Gray was eliminated in the first round, losing on points against Italian Edelweiss Rodriguez.
