Biography

From 1929 to 1934 Slovak track and field athlete Andrej Engel was a multiple-time champion of Czechoslovakia in sprinting. Engel won titles in the 100 metres (1929, 1931–32, 1934), the 200 metres (1931–32, 1934), and the 4 x 100 metres relay (1931–32). He held long-standing Czechoslovak records in both the 100 and 200 metres, with his time in the former lasting from 1930 until 1953. Engel ran in both sprint races at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals in the 100 metres. The following year he won gold in the 200 metres at the International University Games in Torino, Italy. Before the start of World War II he emigrated to Sweden where he spent the rest of his life.
