Czechoslovak track and field athlete Jaroslav Knotek competed for Slavia Praha where he specialised in the hammer throw. Knotek participated in the hammer at the 1934 European Athletics Championships in Torino where he finished 11th in the final. He also reached the final of the discus throw in Torino but failed to record a valid attempt. Two years later he competed in the hammer throw at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but did not advance from the qualification round. After the war Knotek once again competed at the European Athletics Championships, this time in Oslo in 1946, where he finished eighth in the hammer. The following year the first edition of the World Festival of Youth and Students took place in Praha with the festival hosting its own athletics competition where Knotek won gold in the hammer. He then competed in the same event at the 1948 London Olympics, finishing 22nd out of the 24 athletes that took part.
