Akın Altıok took up track and field athletics in 1949 and, within two years, was already a member of the Turkish national team. The highlight of his career came at the inaugural Mediterranean Games in 1951, when he won the triple jump. He was then selected to represent his country in that event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he was 32nd in the qualifying round and did not advance. He continued to compete for a brief period after the Games, but was forced to retire relatively young due to injuries, after winning several national titles over the course of his career.
