Biography

During his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s Polish boxer Jan Dydak fought as both a welterweight and light middleweight. In 1987 Dydak became the national welterweight champion at the Polish Championships, with him also named as the best-trained fighter of the entire event, earning him a place on the Olympic team. In the run-up to the Games, however, Dydak suffered a recurrence of a painful wrist injury, but did not tell his coaches about it in fear of being dropped from the team. Despite this he went on win bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, although he lost his semi-final match to Kenya’s Robert Wangila via a walkover. After the Games he then became the Polish light middleweight champion in 1990 and 1991, but he was forced to retire from the ring before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics due to his long-standing hand injury. Across his career Dydak had 171 fights, winning 159 of them, with him also winning two Golden Gloves awards (1990, 1991) and being named the best Polish boxer for four consecutive years from 1988 to 1991.
