Yevgeny Gavrilenko was the top Soviet 400 hurdler in the 1970s and was on the Soviet national team from 1971-78. Gavrilenko won bronze at the 1976 Olympics and 1974 European Championships. He also competed at the 1972 Olympics, placing sixth, and the 1971 Europeans, where he was fifth. Gavrilenko was the Soviet 400 hurdles champion in 1972 and 1974-76. Injuries forced him to retire from sports in 1979, and he missed the 1980 Moskva Olympics. After finishing his sports career, Gavrilenko worked as a children’s coach and prison guard in Belarus. He also tried his hand in business, exporting glass products and selling sports equipment.
