Decathlete Leonid Litvinenko took up athletics in 1965 and was selected for the Soviet national team in 1969 after winning the 1968 European Junior Championships. The apex of his career was at the 1972 Olympics, where he won a silver medal behind fellow Ukrainian Nikolay Avilov, placing seven at the 1976 Olympics. At the European Championships, Litvinenko was ninth in 1969, seventh in 1971 and fourth in 1974. He also won gold at the 1975 European Combined Events Cup. Lytvynenko won Soviet titles in 1970-71, silvers in 1975-76 and a bronze in 1972.
