Vladimir Sitkin was a high jumper who placed sixth in the event at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Sitkin had competed at the 1954 European Championships where he failed to make the final. He won two medals at the Universiade, with a silver in 1955 and a bronze in 1957.
After the 1956 Olympics Sitkin starting using built-up shoes for the high jump, which helped Yury Stepanov set a world record of 2.16 in July 1957. That year Sitkin was second on the world list with 2.15, at a height of only 1.80 m. The shoes were made illegal in 1958 by the IAAF. Sitkin’s best after that ruling was made was 2.09 in 1963.
