Despite losing the final of the December 1935 Romanian Boxing Championships, Nicolae Berechet was selected to represent his country in the featherweight division in Berlin. Although Berechet felt dizzy before the fight, he was cleared to fight his first bout against Estonia’s Evald Seeberg. Berechet lost on points. Three days later, Berechet was dead. Officially, this was due to sepsis occurring from an infected carbuncle. However, some (Romanian) sources claim an autopsy found traces of poisoning, after which German authorities supposedly suppressed further investigation and ordered Berechet to be buried in Berlin, declining repatriation.
